Self-defence has historically played a primary role in Taijiquan. Today, as in the past, the focus is on individual self-protection and the protection of family members. The wealth of experience of lethal conflicts from past centuries within the Chen clan, which in addition to their own protection was primarily anchored on the battlefield and in the protection of travellers, led to a complex variety of personal self-defence in the last century.
